The Treasury Inspector General for Taxpayer Administration (TIGTA) has received more than 20,000 reports of fake IRS calls and is warning taxpayers to be on the alert. The victims are being called by IRS impersonators who can spoof Caller-IDs and are being told they owe taxes. During the call, the scammers tell the victim that they can settle their debts with a debit/credit card or wire transfer. Also it was reported that the scammers also threaten the victims with arrests, deportation, or loss of business or driver’s license.
The IRS will never call and request financial or personal information. If you do receive a call like this, TIGTA requests that you report it to their integrity hotline at 1-800-366-4484. If you do owe federal taxes and receive this call, TIGTA says to hang up and call the IRS at its official number at 1-800-829-1040.
